When you have a green card, you can stay in the United States legally, work most jobs and even sponsor loved ones for entry into the United States. Still, some situations could result in your removal. You also don't have all of the same rights and privileges as a citizen. Maybe you want to sponsor a loved one to enter the country, or perhaps you just want to vote in the next election. If you decide it is time to become a naturalized citizen, there are many steps involved. You will need to go through an interview and a background check. Additionally, you will need to take in-depth naturalization exams. What will that process entail?
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) administers the naturalization test to immigrants who want to become citizens. Everyone seeking to become a United States citizen will first need to prove their proficiency in the English language and their understanding of the government unless they qualify for an exemption based on disability or age. The naturalization process requires that individuals pass a civics and an English language test. The English test involves speaking and understanding spoken English during an interview, reading written English and writing out a full sentence. You will also need to take an oral test in civics. The USCIS provides a list of 128 civics test questions. Your test will include 20 of those questions, and you will have to answer 12 of them correctly to pass the test. Understanding the naturalization process can help you prepare so that you easily pass the tests required for citizenship.
